Concrete Grind & Seal

Why does concrete need to be repaired?

Concrete grinding, staining (optional), and sealing is an alternative to our 8-10 step mechanical polish service. In comparison to a cream or topical polish, a grind and seal is a longer term solution with added chemical protection. While polished concrete is permeable and breathable, grind and seals offer that same natural concrete look, but sealed off offering a non pourous finish to fight salt and other chemicals your surface may see.

How is the concrete repaired?

By grinding and sealing, the floor is “cleaned” using our commercial diamond grinding equipment. The grinding removes old coatings, paint, and dirt on the surface. After the initial grind, N.E.W Coatings likes to hone out scratches with 80-120 grit tooling. The grinding prepares the surface for proper adhesion of the coatings, and the preparation is why our coatings last a lifetime.

Grinding the concrete also aids in making a very flat and uniform surface. Polished concrete leaves as mid to high gloss, almost mirror like, while grind and seals make a matte, satin, or high gloss finish available depending on the top coat used. To add color to a floor, we use a water based stain that that can range from transparent to opaque. Once the stain is applied, we then lock in the color with a water based epoxy primer and protect the surface with a hi wear urethane. These urethane top coats are great for protecting the surface from a residential spill such as coffee, ketchup, oil or red wine. They also clean great and offer supreme abrasion resistance when it comes to scratching via dragging equipment in a commercial or industrial environment.

Steps to a smooth concrete transformation:

  • Call N.E.W Coatings to identify the acesss and grinding steps necessary to
  • achieve desired results in aggregate exposure and sheen
  • Remove all existing coatings, sealers, or contaminants
  • The substrate (usually a concrete slab) should be clean and free of grease, oil, and
  • dust.
  • Fill and seal any cracks, holes, or joints in the substrate to ensure a flat and uniform
  • surface.
  • Concrete pitting and joint spalling can be repaired via polyurea joint pumps and
  • shaved flush with the surface
  • Apply clear epoxy primer
  • Apply desired urethane top coat in matte, satin, semi gloss, or high gloss
